Tooth decay, erosion, and wear are common concerns for many patients. Thankfully, we offer high-quality tooth coloured fillings using durable materials (such as composite) to remedy these issues. Our professional team are highly experienced in the prevention and treatment of dental cavities, so also apply fissure sealants to teeth to provide extra protection against decay.
A composite or white (tooth coloured) filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks or fractures. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth is removed and then filled with a composite filling. These restorations are bonded to the surrounding tooth material making them suitable for both front and back teeth.
Unlike silver Amalgam fillings, composite fillings are tooth coloured, and therefore can be closely matched to the colour of existing teeth. This makes them more aesthetically suited and better matched to natural teeth, assisting with long-lasting function.
The main component in amalgam is mercury. This is purely because it has the unique ability to bind together the other materials found in the filling material, them being; silver, copper and tin, which creates a putty like substance that hardens quickly due to UV light.
Composite fillings are made with glass and plastic polymers and are the safer and more popular options these days. They’re also called white fillings because of their tooth-coloured properties.
If you have a problematic Amalgam filling from years gone by, then we are also able to safely and carefully remove the restoration and replace it with a more durable composite filling. Not only are silver Amalgam fillings unsightlier than a tooth coloured filling, but many patients also don’t feel comfortable having material containing mercury in their mouth.
If you have an Amalgam filling that isn’t causing any harm (i.e. it’s not fractured, leaking, or damaging the tooth), then it might not require removal. It is only if the filling is doing more harm than good, or if a patient expresses that they want it to be removed, that we will do so. When replacing the Amalgam filling, we endeavour to use a rubber dam around the site to prevent further implications.
At KR Dental, we can also prevent early decay from becoming a cavity by performing a procedure called a fissure sealant. This involves thoroughly cleaning the stained fissures (or grooves) on the tooth and then placing a layer of protective plastic (composite resin) into the cleaned fissure to seal out the decay. Fissure sealants are performed without the need for drilling the tooth and do not normally require any anaesthetic.
If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort, or sensitivity, or can feel holes or pits in your teeth, then you may require a dental filling. Please schedule an appointment with our experienced team by calling (07) 3883 2434 today!
Dr Nipuni Thilakaratne and her assistant were fabulous. So gentle, kind and patient. The best experience I have had at a Dentist in many years. I would recommend this Dental Practice to anyone.
My very first dental experience. At the front desk Janet worked magic very pleasant and over welcoming. Heather also pleasant. Dr Erin Partridge did wonders to my teeth im very happy with. Margaret Butterfield as the assistant made it very comfortable for me thank you all soo much. You deserve a 10 star rating
Dr. Nipuni is the finest dentist I have taken treatments from. She is very professional, kind, flexible and gentle. In my recent treatment, Dr. Nipuni spent her valuable time lavishly in listening / comforting me, explaining the procedures, advising how to followup with the post treatment care. Most importantly, I didn't feel any pain during her caring treatments. 😄😄😄 I would highly recommend her and the KR dental to my friends and any patient needing gentle dental care.
